- D'on surt l'obra 'Above the law'?

Prefereixo deixar aquestes lectures a l'espectador.

Si hi he conegut gent interessant i ens ho hem passat molt bé, significa molt per a mi.

- Has pintat en altres llocs aquí a Catalunya o a Espanya?
Aquesta ha estat la primera vegada!

- Ens podries dir alguna obra d'art urbà que cal veure?
N'hi ha tantes...

Brad Robson: "It’s a real physical challenge painting something big. It involves preparation and focus"
The australian artist speaks about his art beginings, his evolution through street-art murals, and the creative process that meant creating 'Above the law'

When he was seven years old he felt the awakening about art and paintings, watching his father sketching boxers. Five years ago he decidede to combine it with the street-art murals and last spring spent five days in Santa Margarida de Montbui, where he reproduced 'Above the law', his largest mural to date. We have talked to his author, australian artist Brad Robson (Sydney, 1976).

- Could you explain us your beginnings in the world of arts and painting?
I started drawing as a child, I think around 7 years old. My father would sketch boxers fighting. He was a natural talent with the figurative. This was amazing to me, it gave me a real buzz - even at 7! I knew then my passion for drawing was something strong, something real.

- When did you start in the branch of street-art murals?
I started painting walls around 5 years ago, this being an extension of my studio practice. It’s a real physical challenge painting something big. It involves preparation and focus. These things give you real purpose. There’s something extremely satisfying about painting a large mural then standing back and admiring the finished product.

- Where the idea of 'Above the law' comes from?
The “Above The Law” painting was something i created in the studio just before my trip to Spain. I’d spent a few weeks painting portraits for a gallery in Germany and this was the last painting of 6. This ‘interrupted portrait’ illustrates many things about the human condition.

- Justice is blinded and the portrait of the person in 'Above the law' has his eyes strikethroughs. There's any relation between the painting, the title and the image of justice?
I’d rather leave this up to the viewer. To give you a hint: It’s represents everyone in this time, in this era and on this planet.

- How did you achieve the idea of painting 'Above the law' over a façade here in Santa Margarida de Montbui?
Painting this mural was a special experience for me. Not only was the physical part of executing such a large piece fun and exciting, but the journey and the people you meet along the way make it even more special. I spent 5 long days painting this piece, but to be honest, I could've spent 3 weeks! A big thanks to Marc at MursLliures for finding the wall and running such an amazing project for artists to express themselves in the urban environment, Pep (the owner of the building) and his wife Carina and their family were the nicest people you'd hope to meet, and last but not least, Carles my sponsor who drove me out every day to the wall (1 hour each way from Barcelona) and who helped me organise this mural from the beginning, It was truly something that money can’t buy.

- What kind of techniques and paints do you use to create street-art murals?
I use rollers mainly, sometimes spray cans.

- Could you mark us the place where did you create the most complicated or highest painting?
This piece in Spain is my largest mural to date.  I plan on doing more in 2017.
The difficult part of painting large murals is getting the tones right, and your outlines. Once this is figured out, the rest is just filling in the gapps. Sometimes the weather can make things difficult, for example, the wind makes for a hell of a ride!

- Have you ever felt the need to visit some of your street-art murals time after you have created it?
I don’t generally think about them much after they’re finished. It all depends on the journey. If I met cool people and have a blast, then it means more to me. In saying this, I do plan on visiting this mural again in years to come as It was a special moment in time for me.

- Have you ever painted in other places here in Catalonia or Spain? Which ones?
This is the first!

- Could you suggest us a masterpiece of street-art that must be seen?
There are so many...
